A School of at Least 8 sharks on 15th May!

Hurray! The basking sharks are here! It's amazing how often they arrive in the middle of May. Derek Pitman drew us a cartoon about this many years ago. Here it is again! We've had a few basking shark sightings in the last week and the valuable data that you're sending into us shows us that there was a school of AT LEAST 8 basking sharks in Manx waters on the 15th May 2019. Please keep that data coming. Have a look at what we've had so far this year! http://www.manxbaskingsharkwatch.org/sightings-analysis/?date_from=01%2F05%2F2019&date_to=18%2F05%2F2019

Special TT Visitors 2018: Basking Sharks Visit Isle of Man

There's nothing quite like a hot TT week to attract lots of exotic visitors from far flung places. Those of us who watch for basking sharks expect the first basking shark school to arrive in our South Western coastal seas in late May, normally about the 20th to the 24th of May so we were getting worried.....then they arrived, just a little late, on 1st June! We have a school of at least 7 large individuals, maybe many more, it's always hard to tell as, being fish that breath with gills, they don't have to come to the surface like whales and dolphins. They have ...

“WHERE ARE ALL THE BASKING SHARKS”? HOPEFULLY COMING SOON!

I've been asking this question myself and many people are asking me the question too. Well the short answer is that after the very cold winter the water (until the last day or so when it's gone up to 12 degrees C) has stayed a little cold for the zooplankton bloom to occur. We did get a report of one solitary basking shark in mid-May but I would 'normally' expect to see the first schools of basking sharks by now. Dr Kev Kennington of DEFA is our local plankton expert. He did a boat survey last week and found that the water off the East coat of the Isle of Man was a ...
